4 Tips to Jump-Start Your Emergency Fund

Having cash available for emergency situations like an unexpected medical bill, home repair or accident, is essential to having financial security. Saving for unexpected events may seem intimidating or unrealistic, but with a few simple tips, you can be on your way to securing peace-of-mind in no time and with minimal effort.

Start small. To get started, choose a goal that’s realistic for the short-term. For example, a goal of saving $50 per month only adds up to just over $1.50 per day.

Choose one thing to cut. If the thought of adding an additional expense to your paycheck is too much, choose something that you can cut out, like a morning coffee, gym membership or monthly subscription, and put that money toward your savings instead.

Make it automatic. Set up an automatic transfer to occur at the same time every month or week to help reach your goal with little effort. Having a small amount taken from your paycheck or transferred into a separate account allows the expense to happen without feeling the direct effect.

Set it and forget it. Open a separate savings account to keep the funds accessible, but away from temptation. A savings account typically does not come with checks or a debit card, so you’ll be less likely to use those funds immediately.
